2. Objectives of the salinity-tolerant rice varieties with high yield and are suitable with saline lands for Central Coastal region.
3. Originality and Creativeness
- Research on green super rice (GSR) which was firstly conducted in the Central Coastal provinces to exploit the potential for high yields (7 – 10 ton/ha), high rice quality, resistance to pests, and salinity-tolerance.
- Green super rice GSR (selected from the hybrid combination of HHZ varieties and Minghui 63 x 02428) was imported into Vietnam according to the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD), the reception of Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute (CLRRI) assigned by the leader of Green Super Rice project, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).
- Project members have assessed the growth characteristics, yield and salinity-tolerance of 31 varieties in areas with salinity intrusion in paddy field at 0.6-10.4‰ in Tuy An (Phu Yen province), 4.2-8.0‰ in Duy Xuyen (Quang Nam province), 6.2-8.9‰ in Quang Dien (Thua Thien Hue province), and 4.6-8.4‰ in Dien Chau (Nghe An province). Research results identified six salinity-tolerant GSR varieties for the Central Coastal region, including: GSR38, GSR50, GSR58, GSR81, GSR90, and GSR96.
- Research results
The project has recruited 6 salinity-tolerant rice varieties that meet the requirements, including: GSR38, GSR50, GSR58, GSR81, GSR90, and GSR96 for Central Coastal region.
- Products
- 1 final report and 17 thematic reports.
- 6 scientific articles: 4 articles were published on the Journal of Agriculture and Rural Development; and 2 articles were published on Journal of Science, Hue University.
- The salinity-tolerant rice varieties: 32.

- 14 university and college’s thesis of Crop Science.
- Six salinity-tolerant rice varieties with high yield that are consistent with saline lands of Central Coastal region, including: GSR38, GSR50, GSR58, GSR81, GSR90, and GSR96.
- Effectiveness, method of transferring research results and applicability
- Effectiveness of research
- In terms of the education and training aspects
Saline rice in the Central Coastal region.
+ Improving research capacity in scientific research and practical applications for researchers, teachers, students and trainees.
+ Contributing to train 3 masters, 14 engineers of Crop Science.
- In terms of the socio-economic aspects
Improving economic efficiency for the production of saline paddy lands in the Central Coastal region.
- Method of transferring research results
- Announced research findings at the forum Agricultural Extension @ Agriculture titled "Developing quality rice" on September 05, 2013 in Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province.
- Workshop (August 23, 2015) in Thua Thien Hue province with the theme "Recruiting some salinity-tolerant rice varieties for the Central Coastal region" to share experiences and evaluate the salinity-tolerant rice varieties in 4 research sites.
- Through individuals and organizations jointly conducted at 4 research sites (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Department of Plant Protection, Agricultural Extension Station, etc.)
- The results of project have been continuously developed by the coordinating agencies. Particularly, Department of Plant Protection, Phu Yen province has continued to research and replicate. Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Quang Nam province has continued to put into production. In addition, the project findings have been tested in Tuy Phuoc district, Binh Dinh province since winter-spring 2014-2015 season and summer-autumn 2015 season as well as in Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province since summer-autumn 2015 season.
- Applicability of research
The research results could be applied for rice-growing areas on saline land with the similar saline degree of the Central Coastal region.
