1. General information:

Project title: Assessment the accumulation of organic matter in the whiteleg shrimp ponds in Centre for Research and Practice Aquaculture -Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hue University.

Code number: DHH-2014-02-51

Coordinator: Dr. Nguyen Duy Quynh Tram

Implementing institution: Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry

Cooperating institution(s):

      -Centre for research and practices aquaculture, Institute of research and development, University of Agriculture and Forestry.

     - Centre laboratory, Faculty of Animal science, Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry

     - Centre for monitoring and environmental analysis, Institute for Resources and Environment, Hue University.

Duration: from 1/2014 to12/2014.

2. Objective(s):

- To assess the accumulation of N and P in the wastewater from whiteleg shrimp ponds.

- To assess the N and P accumulation in sludge.

- To calculate the N and P budget in whiteleg shrimp ponds.

3. Creativeness and innovativeness:

- This study has evaluated the accumulation of N and P in the wastewater and sludge from whiteleg shrimp ponds. Moreover, the assimilation of nutrient from feed to shrimp harvested were investigated.

- This is the first research on nutrient budget in intensive whiteleg shrimp farmings in Thua Thien Hue Province.

4. Research results:

- The results showed that a large amount of N and P applied to the ponds were in the form of feed, accounted for 92% and 94.5%, respectively and the rest was through the seed and water inlet accounting only low rates.

- Of the feed input, only 31% of N and 9% of P was incorporated into the shrimp harvested.

- The wastewater contained 53% of N and 11% was in the sludge.  Nitrogen loss is 5% of total N inputs.

- The most of the P (40%) was retained in the sludge and a major portion of the P in the wastewater (20%), the amount of P loss was 31% of the P inputs.

- Concentration of BOD and COD from the 2nd month onwards raising higher than recommended (above 50 and 150 mg /l).

5. Products:

- Education products:

     + 01 MSc student was successful defence his thesis

     + 01 undergraduated student did her thesis.

- Scientific products:

    + 01 paper is published in the Journal of Science, Hue University, “Study on the accumulation of nitrogen and phosphorus in whiteleg shrimp ponds Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) in Thua Thien Hue province. Vol. 100 (1), 2015, pp: 197-203.

6. Effects, transfer alternatives of research results and applicability:

- The results of this research help farmers realize the accumulation of nutrients in wastewater and sludge from intensive whiteleg shrimp farming.

- Data on the accumulation of N and P in wastewater and sludge are the basis for the managers, policymakers can refer to in building development planning in aquaculture in general and whiteleg shrimp farming in particular.

- The results of this study help researchers better understand the environmental impacts of whiteleg shrimp farming and have strategies to reduce the organic matter in wastewater and the sludge.
