2. Research results

Huong Phong is a coastal commune in Huong Tra town, Thua Thien Hue province. Because of soil conditions, topography ... so rice planting area accounts for a huge proportion of the total area of agricultural land in the commune. However, due to Huong Phong commune located in Bo and Huong river lower, close to the Tam Giang lagoon, while the commune topography of low-lying areas with an average elevation of about 1-1.5m over sea level combined with the change of climatic factors such as temperature rise, rainfall decrease... so saltwater intrusion phenomenon in the commune has became popular. This phenomenon has caused many of the communal areas of land affected by salinity thus greatly affecting the use of land, including paddy land in the commune. Specifically, some of the rice land is affected by saline commune, the efficient use of land for rice cultivation decreased, especially in the summer-autumn rice crop.... Starting from the problems above shows, it is necessary to give specific assessments of the effects of salt intrusion to the use of rice land in Huong Phong commune.

The results of this research show that:

- Saltwater intrusion had taken place in Huong Phong commune in all years in the 2005-2014 period with fluctuating salinity of about 4.375‰ – 12.962‰. 2008 and 2009 had the lowest salinity due to the high rainfall so had been limited saltwater intrusion. However, in 2013 because of low rainfall average besides there is no major floods occurred, causing prolonged drought conditions leading to salt water intrusion inland place drastically with salinity measured up to 12.962‰.

- On Huong Phong commune has a total of 100 field zones. In particular, there are 18 field zones were intruded by saltwater. These are field zones located in Tam Giang lagoon coastal area regularly affected by the rising of tide phenomenon which makes the salt water intrusion into the field.

- During the period 2005-2014, the rice planting area intruded by saltwater in Huong Phong Commune ranged from 20.30 ha to 58.50 ha / year. Due to the effects of saltwater intrusion, some of rice field zones were untillable or tillable but less efficient so these areas have been abandoned. This condition occurs in summer-autumn crop much more than winter-spring crop by Autumn season rainfall, frequent droughts have made the situation saltwater intrusion occurred more severely.

- According to the survey of households in rice production in Huong Phong Commune showed the yield in saltwater intrusion areas was only an average of 3.2 ton / ha corresponding with 52.45% average yield at areas not saltwater intrusion. The causes of this phenomenon is due in saltwater intrusion areas of land affected by salinity, nutrient-poor, many rice area was searing, burning and dying leaves which reduce rice yields were harvested, which led to a reduction in yield.

- The effects of saltwater intrusion on the field has made the yield of saltwater intrusion field lower dramatically than the field not saline, so the value of farm production in saltwater intrusion area was lower than not saline production. This fact led to a villa is while being profit of fields not saltwater intrusion reach 14.12 -15.42 million VND/ ha, the saline intrusion profit in the fields of people have suffered losses from 2.95 -5.55 million VND / ha. However, because of rice production is the main source of livelihood of the people in Huong Phong commune, besides, people have conception is the labor force as profit, so according to farmers, if production costs excluding labor cost (labor cost about 9 million VND/ha), they still have interest about 3.45- 6.05 million VND / ha. T his is the main reason people make rice production is still carried out on the land saline intrusion.

- Saltwater intrusion has affected the selection of the main varieties cultivated in Huong Phong commune. Specifically, while using Xi23 rice variety, Khang Dan and 4B varieties for planting in the field without salt intrusion, people mostly sow and plant Nep Thom and local Chien in the fields without saltwater intrusion. The reason is that although these varieties have low yield compared to other varieties, but they are the varieties have good resistance  than other varieties.
