Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Duc, Rector; Prof. Dr. Le Dinh Phung, Vice Rector; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Huu Ty, Head of the Department of Science, International Cooperation & Information; and many faculty members of the university were in attendance. Since its establishment in 2002, GSGES has been actively engaged in cooperation activities in Vietnam, particularly in Hue, Hanoi, and Da Nang. These activities include student exchanges, graduate and doctoral programs, joint research projects, and the organization of seminars. One of the significant outcomes of this collaboration is the publication of the book Livelihoods and the Environment in Vietnam (Springer Publishing), written by faculty from GSGES and their Vietnamese partners, including scientists from HUAF and Hue University. This seminar is part of a series of activities marking the 20th anniversary of cooperation between HUAF and Kyoto University.

The objective of the seminar was to present the contents of the book through presentations by contributing scientists. The key topics discussed at the seminar included: (1) Sustainable farming systems on low sandy soils by Prof. Hoang Thi Thai Hoa – HUAF; (2) Community resilience of ethnic groups displaced by hydropower dams by Assoc. Prof. Pham Huu Ty – HUAF; (3) Characteristics of home gardens and their improvement through vanilla cultivation by Dr. Vu Tuan Minh – HUAF; (4) Local-scale livelihood activities to enhance household economies and conserve ecosystems by MSc. Ho Tan Duc – HUAF; (5) Improving rice cultivation on saline soils in North Central Vietnam by Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Ho Lam – Institute for Economic and Social Development, Hue University; (6) Aquatic plant ecosystems in An Hoa lagoon by Assoc. Prof. Hoang Cong Tin – Faculty of Science, Hue University; (7) The impact of urbanization on traditional garden house living environments by Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Tung – Faculty of Science, Hue University; (8) The traditional community house rebuilding project of the Co-tu people by Dr. Truong Hoang Phuong – Faculty of Science, Hue University.
This seminar provided a valuable opportunity for scientists to exchange ideas, share information, and expand cooperation in research and the application of solutions for livelihoods and environmental protection in Vietnam.
